About Goldwin clothing

Goldwin started in 1950 when Tosaku Nishida set up a knit fabric factory in Tsuzawa, now part of Oyabe City in Toyama Prefecture; the business was incorporated the following year. It became a sporting goods maker and launched the Goldwin name in 1958, applying what it had learned about knitting to ski sweaters and then to a full range of ski clothing. The lifestyle side of the label, which is most of what you see here, arrived in autumn 2016. The Oyabe site is still in use and now runs as the company's research and prototyping facility, which is why two jackets in this range carry the town's name.

Goldwin jackets, shells and down

The outerwear is where the ski background is most obvious — sleeves cut with the arm already bent, hems that sit right when you reach up, and very little in the way of external branding. Several of the shells and down pieces are built on Pertex fabrics, and the range uses more than one type for different jobs, so it is worth reading the individual product page rather than assuming they perform alike. Two of the jackets use dope-dyed nylon, where the colour goes into the fibre before it is spun rather than being applied to finished cloth. It uses far less water than conventional dyeing and the colour holds up better against sunlight over years of wear.

Goldwin One Tuck pants, shorts and T-shirts

The One Tuck Tapered Stretch Pants are the piece most people arrive looking for — a single pleat at the waist, a taper through the leg, and enough give in the fabric to walk properly in. They sit alongside corduroy straight-leg trousers for colder weather and the Easy Wide Shorts for summer. The T-shirts split into two groups worth telling apart: the oversized pocket tees are a heavier everyday cotton, while the WF Light long-sleeves are thin and quick-drying, closer to a base layer than a T-shirt.

Goldwin FAQs

Goldwin is a Japanese company based in Toyama Prefecture, and its Oyabe site handles research, prototyping and some production. Manufacturing across the wider range is not all in Japan, so check the individual product page for the country of origin of a specific piece.
Both, and the split is deliberate. The company spent decades making ski and mountain clothing before launching a lifestyle line in autumn 2016, and that line is most of what you will find here. The construction comes from the performance side but the cuts and colours are made for ordinary wear.
The pigment is mixed into the polymer before the nylon fibre is spun, rather than being applied to the finished cloth afterwards. It uses considerably less water than conventional dyeing and the colour sits through the fibre instead of on it, so it fades more slowly in sunlight.
Pertex, GORE-TEX and CORDURA appear across the outerwear and trousers, alongside the company's own developments. Different Pertex fabrics do different jobs — some are lightweight down shells, others are weatherproof — so two Pertex jackets are not necessarily comparable.
