What makes Hoka trainers different

Two things, and they work together. The midsole is far thicker than a conventional running shoe, which absorbs impact that would otherwise travel up through the leg. And the sole is rockered — curved up at heel and toe, so the foot rolls through the stride rather than striking flat and pushing off. The combination is why a first run in Hokas feels odd and a second feels obvious, and why the brand went from a niche ultra-running name to something people wear to the shops. The trade-off is weight and ground feel: a Bondi will not tell you much about the surface underneath it, which is exactly what some people want and a dealbreaker for others.

Hoka road trainers: Clifton, Bondi and Mach

The Clifton is the everyday one and the model most people start with — cushioned but not extreme, light enough for daily miles, and the version most likely to work if you are not sure what you want. The Bondi is the maximum cushioning option, the softest and heaviest in the range, made for long slow distance and for standing up all day. The Mach sits the other way, firmer and more responsive, for faster running. Gore-Tex versions of the Clifton handle British winters, which is the practical reason to pay the extra.

Hoka trail trainers: Speedgoat, Mafate, Challenger, Stinson and Kaha

The trail range covers a wider spread than most people expect. The Speedgoat is the technical end, with an aggressive Vibram outsole for genuinely rough ground. The Challenger is the door-to-trail option — a lighter tread that works on paths and towpaths without feeling clumsy on tarmac. Mafate and Stinson are the heavier, more cushioned trail shoes, and both have crossed over into being worn as lifestyle trainers rather than for running. The Kaha is the hiking end, a Gore-Tex low-cut boot in all but name. If you are buying to walk rather than run, the Kaha and the Stinson are the ones to look at.

Hoka FAQs

Both Yards Store shops carry Hoka: 13 Old Bank Street in Manchester and 86 Pinstone Street in Sheffield. Ranges and sizes differ between the two, so it is worth ringing ahead if you want a particular model. Everything on this page ships across the UK.
The Clifton is the balanced everyday shoe — cushioned, reasonably light, and the one most people should start with. The Bondi has the thickest midsole in the range, so it is softer and heavier, made for long distances and for being on your feet all day. If you are unsure, the Clifton.
The Kaha is the closest thing to a hiking shoe, with a Gore-Tex upper and a grippier sole. The Stinson and Mafate are heavily cushioned trail shoes that suit long days on foot. For pavements and everyday wear, the Clifton or the Bondi will do it and are lighter.
