Where the patterns come from

Ralph Lauren launched RRL in 1993, named after the Colorado ranch he and his wife Ricky had bought a few years earlier — one R each. The clothing looks backwards on purpose: ranch hands, miners, railroad workers and soldiers from the late 1800s through to the Second World War. Shirting is where that shows most clearly. A western shirt with a pointed yoke and snap fasteners, a workshirt with two chest pockets and a straight hem, a camp collar cut for heat — these are patterns that existed before they were fashion, and RRL reproduces them closely rather than reinterpreting them.

Western, work and camp

The western shirts are the slimmest cut here, with the yoke across the chest and back and snaps instead of buttons — in chambray, denim in black and rinse, chamois and plaid twill. Workshirts sit fuller and plainer: the oxford in indigo, the double-faced jacquard, the wool blend jacquard. The Norfolk and Farrell are sport shirts, closer to a standard long-sleeve with a soft collar. For summer, the madras camp shirt and the aloha short sleeve open at the neck and have no collar stand.

The overshirts

Several pieces here are cut as outer layers rather than shirts. The roughout suede western overshirt is the heaviest — suede with the nap side out, so it takes marks and softens. The indigo denim overshirt and the jaspe denim shirt jacket work as light jackets over a tee. The plaid wool twill overshirt and shirt jacket, the brushed twill and the patterned jacquard are all cut roomy enough to layer, and the plaid wool cashmere and plaid wool workshirt jumpers blur the line between shirt and knitwear.

Fabric and fading

RRL washes and finishes most of its shirting before it leaves the factory, so pieces arrive looking worn rather than new. Indigo shirts and chambrays will keep fading along the seams and at the elbows with wear. Wool and cashmere blends should be washed cool or not at all — airing does most of the work. Suede needs a protector spray before the first wear.
