About Belstaff

Eli Belovitch had been working with waterproof fabrics in Middleton since 1909 before he and his son-in-law Harry Grosberg converted a brewery, some cottages and a blacksmith's shop on Caroline Street in Longton into a factory. That was 1924, and the name is simply Belovitch and Staffordshire pushed together. For the first four years they made waterproof capes, rucksacks and army shirts; the motorcycle clothing followed, and the waxed cotton the brand became known for came out of Belovitch's search abroad for a fabric that would keep water out and still let a rider breathe.

Grosberg ran the company as chairman for thirty years. The Longton factory has long since closed and Belstaff is now London-based, but the design vocabulary has not moved far from where it started — belted waists, slanted map pockets, four-pocket field layouts.

Belstaff overshirts: Drome, Cover, Tourer and CS60

The overshirt is the piece Belstaff does best now, and there are four shapes here. The Drome is the one people search for by name and the closest to a shirt in cut. The Cover and Tourer are plainer and darker. The CS60 is the most jacket-like of the four, with the patch pockets and the squarer body that put it nearer a field jacket than a shirt.

All four sit in the same gap: too structured to be a shirt, too light to be a coat. That is the layer most people are short of in British weather, which is why the category has grown the way it has.

Belstaff field jackets, the Rig and the Scale shirt

The Service Fieldmaster and the Centenary Field Jacket are the heavier pieces — four-pocket field layouts drawn from military patterns, the Centenary made for the brand's hundredth year in 2024. The Rig jacket is the shorter, cleaner alternative. Below those, the Scale shirt is a proper shirt in two colours, the Shadow T-shirt is the only tee left, and the Seasonal Watch crewneck is the one knit — a heavy rib jumper with the phoenix patch at the chest.

Belstaff FAQs

It combines Belovitch and Staffordshire — co-founder Eli Belovitch's surname and the county the company started in. It was originally spelled with two Ls, and the oldest surviving Belstaff garment, a leather flying jacket from the mid-1920s, still carries the "Bellstaff" label.
A shirt-cut layer made in heavier cloth than a shirt, with proper pockets and enough structure to hold its shape. It works as an outer layer in mild weather and as a mid-layer under a coat when it turns. The Drome is the softest of the four here; the CS60 is the most jacket-like.
The company was founded in Stoke-on-Trent in 1924 and is now headquartered in London. The original Longton factory closed after the textile downturn of the 1990s, so production is no longer in Staffordshire — check the individual product page for where a specific piece is made.
Some of it. Belstaff pioneered waxed cotton for motorcycle clothing in the 1920s and still uses it on parts of the range, but plenty of the current outerwear uses other fabrics. Whether a particular jacket is waxed, and how it should be cared for, is listed on its product page.
