Rugged twill, tin cloth and the Filson bag fabrics
Almost everything here is one of two cottons. Rugged twill is a dense unwaxed canvas with saddle-grade bridle leather straps and solid brass hardware: it is the fabric on the field bags and the classic duffles, it scuffs and softens rather than tearing, and the leather darkens with handling. Tin cloth is the same idea with an oil-finish wax added, so it turns rain and resists being dragged through brush, and it arrives stiff before settling into shape. The Dryden line is the exception — a hard-wearing synthetic rather than cotton, lighter and less precious, made for airports rather than fields. Which fabric you want comes down to whether the bag is going to get wet and whether you mind it looking used.
Filson duffles, backpacks and briefcases
Duffles are the bulk of the range, running from an XS compact through to full weekend size in both rugged twill and tin cloth, with the 48-hour and Scout 50L sitting in between. The Dry duffles and roll-top totes are a different proposition — sealed against water rather than merely repellent, for boats and river work where a waxed cotton bag would eventually let water through. On the backpack side, the Surveyor is the plain daily option in 25 and 36 litres, the Journeyman the older canvas-and-leather shape, and the Scout range the lighter, more modern one. The briefcases are fewer but distinct: the Original is the flat rugged twill case sized for a laptop and papers, the Tin Cloth Compact is the smaller waxed version, the 24-Hour adds depth for an overnight change, and the Dryden is the lightest, in a synthetic rather than canvas.
Buying a Filson bag to keep
These cost several times what a nylon equivalent does, and the argument for them is not that they are better on day one. Rugged twill and tin cloth both look worse after six months and better after five years — the canvas softens, the leather darkens where hands go, and the wax wears thin at the corners in a way that reads as use rather than damage. The construction is old-fashioned in a useful way: bar tacks at the stress points, bound seams, a reinforced base, and brass that does not corrode. Nothing here is engineered in the modern sense; there are no compartments for cables and no laptop suspension systems. What you are paying for is a bag that gets better with handling instead of tiring, which is a slower proposition than most and the reason people who own one tend to own several.
