About Hestra gloves

Martin Magnusson set up a workshop in a farmhouse in Hestra, a village in the Swedish province of Småland, in 1936, and began making hard-wearing leather gloves for the lumberjacks working the timber forests around it. A ski slope opened nearby the following year, and he realised the same gloves suited skiers. That is the whole origin of the company, and it is still in the same village, still owned by the Magnusson family, now into the fourth generation.

The part that matters when you are buying is that Hestra buys its own leather, wool and lining and makes the gloves in its own factories. Very few glove brands control that chain, and it is why fit and consistency hold up across the range rather than varying from model to model.

Hestra deerskin and dress gloves

Deerskin is the leather Hestra is best known for and the reason the John and Daniel models turn up on so many lists. It stretches to the shape of the hand and stays soft rather than stiffening, so a pair breaks in and then stays broken in. The Deerskin Primaloft Rib adds synthetic insulation and a knitted rib cuff, which seals the wrist and stops the draught most leather gloves let in. The Daniel pairs a wool back with a leather palm, warmer to look at and lighter to wear.

Hestra winter and outdoor gloves

The Diorit is the everyday winter glove in the range — a soft shell with a leather palm, cut close enough to keep some feel through the fingers. The Fält Guide is the substantial one, built for cold weather outdoors rather than for a commute. The Biathlon Trigger Comp comes from Hestra's competition side and is cut for hands that need to work rather than just stay warm.

Worth knowing across all of them: Hestra introduced gloves with removable liners in the 1980s, so on many models the liner can be replaced or dried separately rather than the whole glove being written off.

Hestra owns its factories and makes its gloves in them rather than buying in finished product. Design and development happen at the headquarters in Hestra in southern Sweden, and the company buys all its own leather, wool and lining. Several models are hand-sewn by experienced glove makers.
