About Hikerdelic clothing

Proper Magazine started in Manchester as a fanzine and became one of the few men's lifestyle titles still going. After fifteen years writing about other people's clothing, Mark Smith and Neil Summers made their own. The name came first — Mark used the word in a throwaway tweet in 2012 and was surprised nobody had said it before.

What it means is best explained in their own terms. Growing up in Stockport, one side of town is the Peak District and the other is concrete, and the connecting thread was outdoor clothing worn in the wrong place: Berghaus and Sprayway on the hills, and the same jackets outside warehouse parties, because coming out of a rave at four in the morning you needed something warm. Peak meets precinct.

The clearest expression of that came in 2022, when Tim Burgess asked them to recreate the jacket he wore in The Charlatans' 1997 "How High" video — a piece he had never identified, having handed it back to a stylist and never received the replacement he was promised. Hikerdelic made it for the single's 25th anniversary, and it sold on a three-day pre-order window.

Hikerdelic T-shirts, hoodies and sweats

Graphics are the largest part of the range and the entry point for most people. The Core Logo, Vinyl Logo, Camp Logo and Quad Logo tees carry the marks; Peak Meets Precinct, Higher Than The Sun, Bicycle Day, Solar Punk and Trek Your Head carry the jokes. The references are acid house as often as they are hiking, which is the point.

Beyond the tees sit the Kaeru and Swirl sweaters, the Hotel and Bicycle Day hoodies, and the Drifter fleece.

Hikerdelic jackets, smocks and worker pants

The Conway Smock is the piece most associated with the brand — a pullover shell in ripstop, here in grape, forest and khaki, with a Petroglyph version. The Coterie and Gridstop Coterie quilted jackets, the Calland ripstop puffer and the Mucker packable are the insulated options, and the Sporeswear and Libero jackets sit between shell and shirt.

On the bottom half the Worker Pant runs in cotton, denim and corduroy, with Worker and Beach shorts for summer and the Mendelian jeans as the only denim.

Hikerdelic caps, socks and collaborations

The Worker Cap and Sol Cap come in five colours between them, alongside waffle beanies and a glow-in-the-dark bucket hat. Socks run to Strolling, Trip, Stripe and Graphic patterns, and there are mugs, pin badges, slipmats and a picnic blanket for anyone already committed.

The collaborations are worth knowing about: Elliker bags including the Cautley backpack, Semer sling and Carston tote, MessyWeekend sunglasses, and previous work with Novesta, Barbour, Holubar and Yogi.

Wanderdelic FAQs

A recreation of the yellow and black jacket Tim Burgess wore in The Charlatans' 1997 "How High" video — the thing he says he gets asked about more than anything else about the band. He never found out what the original was, so twenty-five years later he asked Hikerdelic to make one. It launched on the single's 25th anniversary in June 2022, carrying the Core Logo alongside "How High" and the number 25. A touring bag followed in 2024.
Both, deliberately. The founders grew up in Stockport between the Peak District and the precincts, and the brand comes from watching technical outerwear get worn in both places. The shells and quilted jackets are built to work outdoors; the graphics come from acid house. The Conway Smock is the piece that sits most clearly in the middle.
