About RRL Mens Clothing

The jeans

Denim is where RRL starts. The jeans are named after the wash rather than the cut, which catches people out — Otisfield, Ridgecrest, Grandfalls, Hawley, Claremont, Fenimore, Midlands and Stratham describe the finish, and the fit is stated separately as slim, slim narrow, straight or vintage 5-pocket. Most are selvedge, woven on shuttle looms that produce a denser cloth and a finished edge inside the outseam. Almost all arrive washed and distressed, so a pair looks worn from the first day rather than after a year of use.

Knitwear and sweats

Knitwear is the other half of the collection and covers a lot of ground. The Aran and shawl collar jumpers are the heaviest, with a cashmere shawl collar cardigan above them. Fair Isle and indigo jacquard cardigans carry the pattern work, and the marled turtleneck and appliquéd wool jumper sit between. On the lighter side, the waffle knit crewneck, garment-dyed fleece hoodies and French terry sweatshirts are the everyday layers.

Jackets and trousers

Outerwear runs from the corduroy collar deck and denim jackets and the Dockman trucker through to heavier pieces: the shearling-panelled roughout suede, the faux-fur-trim parka, the oilcloth hooded jacket and the indigo dot stripe engineer coat. Trousers divide between officer's chinos in flat and wide-width cuts, carpenter and field trousers in canvas and twill, and herringbone officer's shorts for summer.

Shirts and overshirts are in RRL shirts, leather goods and caps in accessories, and everything together in RRL by Ralph Lauren.

RRL-Kleidung FAQs

Denim woven on old shuttle looms, which produce a narrower bolt with a finished edge — the self-edge — that stops it fraying. The cloth is usually denser than modern denim, which is why it fades in a more defined way along the creases and seams.
After the wash, not the fit. Otisfield, Ridgecrest, Grandfalls, Hawley, Claremont, Fenimore, Midlands and Stratham all describe the finish and the level of distressing. The cut is listed separately on each product page as slim, slim narrow, straight or vintage 5-pocket.
Slim narrow is the closest through the leg, slim sits a little easier, straight is fuller, and the vintage 5-pocket is the most relaxed. Waist sizes run in inches. Because the washes differ in how much the denim has been softened, two pairs in the same waist can feel slightly different.
Most of it is washed, distressed and finished before it leaves the factory, so it arrives with the character a garment would normally take years to develop. Indigo pieces will keep fading with wear.
A trouser based on the flat-front cotton twill chinos worn by American officers in the mid-twentieth century. Straighter through the leg than a modern chino, with a plainer front and a higher rise.
Wash denim inside out, cold, and as rarely as you can — the fades are the point, and frequent hot washing flattens them. Wool and cashmere knitwear should go on a wool cycle or be hand washed and dried flat. Airing does most of the work on both.
Yes. We stock RRL at both Yards Store shops — 13 Old Bank Street in Manchester and 86 Pinstone Street in Sheffield. Ranges differ between the two, so call ahead if you want a particular piece.
