Veja trainers and what the price pays for

Veja's whole proposition is what happens upstream of the shoe. The cotton is organic and grown in Brazil and Peru, the rubber comes from wild Amazonian rubber trees rather than plantations, and the brand buys both at prices set above the market rather than at it. That is the cost, and it is the reason a Veja costs more than a visually similar trainer from a mass-market brand. The other half of the answer is what Veja does not spend money on: the company has built its name without conventional advertising, and puts the difference into materials instead. Whether that is worth the premium is a judgement, but it is a specific and checkable one rather than a vague claim about sustainability.

Choosing between the V-10, V-12, Campo and Volley

The leather models are where most people start and the differences are small but real. The V-10 is the fuller, chunkier shape with the largest V on the side. The V-12 is slimmer and lower, with a more streamlined toe — the tidier of the two under trousers. The Campo is the cleanest and most minimal, with the smallest branding, and the one that works closest to a smart shoe. The Volley is the outlier: a canvas or leather tennis silhouette with a thicker cupsole and a more retro build. Sizing across all four is worth checking against the product pages rather than assuming, since Veja's fit is not uniform across lasts.

Veja Rio Branco, Condor and Dekkan

The other half of the range moves away from the tennis shape entirely. The Rio Branco is the retro runner — a low, wedge-soled seventies silhouette in Alveomesh or Nolyn, and the model that has done most to move Veja beyond the plain white trainer. The Paulistana in ripstop sits alongside it. The Condor 3 is a genuine running shoe with a cushioned sole, in engineered mesh or an off-road build with a deeper tread, and the Dekkan is the trail option in Alveomesh with a grippier outsole. If you are buying to run rather than to walk about in, those last two are the ones to look at.

Veja FAQs

Both are leather tennis-style trainers and both carry the large V. The V-10 is the fuller, chunkier shape with the bigger side panel. The V-12 is slimmer and lower with a more streamlined toe, which makes it the tidier of the two under a trouser. Beyond that, it is preference rather than function.
Veja's recycled mesh, made from post-consumer plastic bottles. It is used on the Rio Branco, Dekkan and other lighter models, and it is the reason those shoes are noticeably lighter than the leather ones. It breathes well and is not waterproof.
Both Yards Store shops carry the brand: 13 Old Bank Street in Manchester and 86 Pinstone Street in Sheffield. Sizing varies between Veja models, so trying a pair on is worth the trip. Ranges differ between the two shops, so ring ahead for a particular model or size.
