Patagonia Fleece FAQs
Better Sweater has a knit face, so it looks like a jumper rather than a fleece and works under a jacket or on its own in town. Synchilla is the original heavyweight pile fleece — warmer, bulkier and more obviously outdoor kit. Both are recycled polyester.
The high-loft, shaggy fleece with the contrasting nylon trim, based on Patagonia's original 1980s pile jackets. It traps a lot of air for its weight, so it's warmer than it looks, and it's the most recognisable fleece the brand makes alongside the Classic Retro-X.
Classic Retro-X and Retro Pile, because of the high-loft construction. Synchilla is close behind. Better Sweater is mid-weight, and Micro D is the lightest — meant as a layer under something rather than an outer layer on its own.
A jacket if it's your outer layer, since the sleeves matter once the wind gets up. A vest if you're layering — it keeps your core warm under a shell without adding bulk at the arms, and it works over a shirt in spring and autumn.
Much of it. Patagonia has been making fleece from recycled plastic bottles since the mid-1980s, and recycled polyester runs through the Better Sweater, Synchilla and Micro D ranges. The exact content is listed on each product page.
Cool wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle, with liquid detergent rather than powder, which can leave residue in the pile. Skip the fabric softener — it coats the fibres and flattens the loft. Air dry rather than tumbling.
Regular, with enough room to layer over a t-shirt or baselayer. The Retro Pile and Retro-X are cut a little boxier by design. Measurements are on each product page, and both shops hold Patagonia if you'd rather try one on.
