Patagonia has been making fleece since the late 1970s, when it started using a synthetic pile fabric borrowed from the toilet-seat cover industry — a story the company still tells. Synchilla followed in the mid-eighties, made partly from recycled bottles, and it changed what outdoor clothing was made of. The names have stuck since, which is why choosing a Patagonia fleece means picking a range rather than a weight.

Better Sweater is the one to start with: a knit face that looks like a jumper rather than a fleece, so it works under a jacket or in an office. It comes as a jacket, a vest, a crewneck and a quarter-zip. Retro Pile and Classic Retro-X are the high-loft ones with the shaggy surface and the contrasting trim — warmer, bulkier and unmistakably Patagonia. Synchilla is the original heavyweight. At the other end, Micro D is thin enough to layer under a shell without adding bulk, and Textured Fleece sits between the two in a smoother finish.

Jacket, vest or pullover

A full-zip jacket is the most versatile — it goes on and off easily and vents when you get warm. Vests keep the core warm while leaving the arms free, which is why they work over a shirt or under a shell. Quarter-zips and pullovers hold more warmth around the neck and read cleaner, but you're committed once it's on. Most of the ranges here come in all three.

Better Sweater has a knit face, so it looks like a jumper rather than a fleece and works under a jacket or on its own in town. Synchilla is the original heavyweight pile fleece — warmer, bulkier and more obviously outdoor kit. Both are recycled polyester.

Cool wash at 30°C on a gentle cycle, with liquid detergent rather than powder, which can leave residue in the pile. Skip the fabric softener — it coats the fibres and flattens the loft. Air dry rather than tumbling.
