Torrentshell 3L is where most people start — a three-layer waterproof with taped seams, priced as an everyday jacket rather than a mountain one. It's the right choice for commuting and dog walks. Granite Crest uses a more breathable membrane and is cut closer, which matters once you're walking uphill and generating heat, and the Triolet is the technical end with a helmet-compatible hood. Below all three, the Boulder Fork packs smaller for anyone who wants a shell in a bag rather than on their back.

Synthetic or down

This is the decision that actually matters. Nano Puff uses synthetic insulation, which keeps working when it gets damp and dries quickly. Down Sweater is warmer for its weight and packs smaller, but loses loft the moment it gets wet. For British weather and anything active, synthetic. For dry cold and travel, down. Both compress into their own pocket, and the Jackson Glacier and Downdrift sit above them when you want more.

Everything in between
