The ranch, and where the name comes from

Ralph Lauren bought a cattle ranch in Colorado in the late 1980s — thousands of acres of open country, a long way from New York. He called it the Double RL, one R for himself and one for his wife Ricky, and in 1993 he launched a clothing line under the same name. RRL was never an extension of Polo. It looks at a narrower and older set of references: the workwear of ranch hands, miners and railroad men from the late 1800s onwards, and American military uniforms from the Civil War through both World Wars. Where Polo is Ivy League and East Coast, RRL is the West, and it reproduces old garments closely rather than reinterpreting them.

Denim first

Jeans are the foundation of the range. RRL cuts them slim, straight and narrow, in selvedge and standard denim, and names each one after the wash rather than the fit — Otisfield, Ridgecrest, Grandfalls, Hawley, Claremont, Fenimore, Midlands, Stratham. Most arrive already washed and distressed, so a pair looks lived-in from the first wear rather than after a year. Alongside the jeans sit officer's chinos, carpenter and field trousers in canvas and twill, and herringbone officer's shorts.

Knitwear, outerwear and the small things

Knitwear is the other half of the collection — Aran and shawl collar jumpers, Fair Isle and jacquard cardigans, marled turtlenecks and cashmere. Outerwear runs from the corduroy collar deck and denim jackets to shearling-panelled suede, faux-fur-trim parkas and coated twill. Then there are the pieces that make RRL what it is: hand-tooled leather billfolds and belts, indigo bandanas, roughout suede trucker caps, oilcloth messenger bags, and the occasional candle or set of shot glasses.

Buying RRL

RRL is stocked in a small number of shops rather than widely distributed, and pieces are made in limited runs — a particular wash or a jacquard pattern generally won't return the following season. We hold it at both Yards Store shops, in Manchester and Sheffield, and reductions across the range appear here as the season turns.

Polo draws on Ivy League and East Coast sportswear. RRL looks to American workwear and military clothing from the late 1800s through to the Second World War — ranch hands, miners, soldiers. It's a smaller, more specialised line, made in limited runs and stocked in fewer shops.
Smaller production runs, and materials chosen for accuracy rather than cost — selvedge denim from Japanese mills, vegetable-tanned leathers, hand-tooling on the belts and wallets. Many pieces also go through additional washing and distressing processes before they leave the factory.
Denim woven on old shuttle looms, which produce a narrower bolt with a finished edge — the self-edge — that stops it fraying. It's slower to make and the fabric is usually denser, which is why it fades in a more defined way over time.
Cuts are named on each product: slim, slim narrow, straight and vintage 5-pocket. Slim narrow is the closest through the leg, straight the fullest. The wash names — Otisfield, Ridgecrest, Grandfalls and so on — describe the finish rather than the fit, so check both on the product page.
Most of it is washed, distressed and finished before it leaves the factory, so it arrives with the character a garment would normally take years to develop. It's deliberate, and indigo pieces will keep fading with wear.
