Snow Peak titanium mugs: single wall or double wall

The whole decision on this page. A single-wall mug is one layer of titanium — around 100 grams, packable, and it can sit directly on a stove or in the embers of a fire to boil water, which no double-wall cup can do. The trade-off is that it burns your hands and loses heat quickly. A double-wall cup has a vacuum between two layers, so it holds a drink hot for far longer and stays cool enough to grip, but it cannot go near a flame and costs more. If you are camping and want one vessel for boiling and drinking, single wall. If you want coffee that is still warm twenty minutes later, double wall.

Why titanium, and the Shimo alternative

Titanium is lighter than stainless steel, does not corrode, and is flavour-neutral — it will not put a metallic edge on coffee or tea the way some metals do. It is also awkward to press and shape, which is why Snow Peak makes it in Tsubame-Sanjo with metalworkers who have done it for generations, and why it costs what it does. The anodised colours are an electrical process rather than a coating, so they will not chip off. The Shimo tumblers and the vacuum bottle are the stainless steel alternative: heavier, cheaper, insulated, and better suited to a desk or a car than a rucksack.
